The Spanish consumer organization OCU warns of an increase in the number of complaints against car rental companies. The organization has received a total of 181 inquiries and complaints about car rental companies since June.

Reasons for the complaints are incorrect or unjustified rates, the ‘obligation’ to extend the basic insurance, incorrectly charging costs afterwards or a lack of information.

The improper or unlawful costs arise from alleged damage that has not been established when the vehicle is returned, a bill of more than 30 euros for the fuel service – in addition to the costs for the fuel itself – or additional cleaning costs. Another annoyance among consumers is the obligation to extend the coverage of the compulsory basic insurance when it has to be taken out with a debit card instead of a credit card.

Complaints

The employee of the rental company often keeps hammering away at the driver about the risks of an accident. His goal is to make the tenant pay for any roadside assistance services or to opt for the more expensive all-risk insurance.

Lack of information is another common complaint. Full information about the contract, including all clauses and exceptions, is rarely included in the order slip or offered during the purchase process, forcing the user to search for it on the company’s website.

According to the OCU, most car rental companies face these types of issues, although Gold Car and Sixt Rent stand out in the number of complaints. The consumer organization encourages consumers to file a complaint in the event of complaints and reminds them that they can go to court. If the amount claimed is less than 2,000 euros, they do not need to hire a lawyer.

Tips

The OCU recalls that when collecting the car it is “vital” to check the body of the car and when returning the car to accompany the employee to inspect the vehicle. Always ask for a document showing how much petrol is in the tank and that the car is free of visible damage.
